PROUDLY SUPPORTING PDSA (The Vet Charity For Pets In Need)

Dog agility is a popular and fun sport in which a handler directs a dog through a series of obstacles as accurately as possible in a race against the clock. Dogs run off lead, being guided only by the voice commands and body signals of their handler. This requires intensive training and great co-ordination between handler and dog.

Fun dog agility is very different from competition agility. The purpose of fun agility classes is to enable dogs to exercise, work their minds, have fun and burn off energy. There is no right or wrong at a fun class. There is no aim, and perfection is not necessary.

The aim of fun agility training is to teach students to become coaches for pet dogs, not competition dogs.

Fun agility can be suitable for most dogs regardless of their age, breed and physical ability (suitability to participate will be discussed prior to enrolment).

An agility course consists of a number of standard obstacles including tunnels, A-frames, hoop jumps and weave poles.

Fun agility has many benefits:

  • Burning off energy and addressing boredom, which will lead to a reduction in destructive behaviours around the home and even address some forms of aggression

  • An increase in self esteem for nervous and anxious dogs

  • An increase in awareness and alertness, and a sharpening of the dog’s mind

  • An improved bond between you and your dog, which will lead to a better all round relationship

  • Better health and fitness for both you and your dog

  • Much needed exercise which is a basic need of EVERY dog

  • Increased trust and confidence

  • Better basic obedience, with the ability to follow instruction

  • Improved flexibility

  • Fun for both you and your dog

  • An outlet for working, high energy and active breeds

  • Increased fitness, flexibility and stamina for dogs and their handlers
